CINCINNATI, Ohio — Drake men's tennis extended its winning streak to nine matches Friday afternoon with a 4-3 victory over Xavier at the Camargo Racquet Club. The Bulldogs improved to 9-2 overall, while the Musketeers fell to 4-7.
Drake opened strong in doubles play, securing the opening point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. The duo of Ulysse Verrando and Adan Tarquino defeated Nick Herdoiza and Alex Kotarski, 6-3, at the top spot. Arin Menon and Alex Yeager followed with a 6-3 win over Andrew Spurck and Bode Campbell at No. 3 doubles to clinch the point. The No. 2 match was left unfinished.
Xavier evened the match early in singles play with a straight-set win at No. 3 before Sam Melaga responded for Drake at the No. 4 position, defeating Samuel Frizelle, 6-1, 6-3, to restore the Bulldogs' lead.
The Musketeers answered with victories at Nos. 1 and 5 to take a 3-2 advantage, but Drake closed the match with wins on the final two courts.
Arin Menon delivered a key performance at No. 6 singles, earning a 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 victory over Bode Campbell to tie the match at 3-3. Alan Gonzalez then sealed the win at No. 2 singles, rallying to win a first-set tiebreak 7-0 before pulling away for a 7-6 (7-0), 6-1 triumph over Max Pettingell.
Drake will look to keep its momentum rolling Saturday evening in Cincinnati against Northern Kentucky.
