COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Drake women's soccer team took to the pitch at Stewart Field on Sunday afternoon against Colorado College and suffered a 1-0 defeat in its second game of the 2026 season.
The first 45 minutes of action played out relatively even between the Bulldogs and Tigers. Drake had the advantage in shots taken, 5-3, but Colorado College had two shots on target compared to one for the Bulldogs.
The two sides went into the halftime break deadlocked at 0-0 and then the match was put into a weather delay due to lightning in the area.
Play resumed after a nearly two and half hour delay with both teams looking to find the first goal of the day. That goal ultimately came in the 57th minute for the Tigers. Colorado College seized the opportunity by drawing a penalty kick and Ella Ashouri converted the attempt.
The penalty kick proved to be the game-winner as the Bulldog attack struggled to get going and registered just one shot on target in three attempts in the second half.
"We were good in possession in the first half and created a few good chances, but nothing that really tested their goalkeeper," Drake head coach
Lindsey Horner said. "We never really got the same rhythm in the second half in terms of possession, but we had some good runs that threatened the backline but overall, they were better than us in the second half mostly because we let ourselves down in too many moments that I know we can correct over the next few games.
"We are disappointed not to get something from this trip, but these experiences accelerated our growth," Horner continued. "Our third tough game in-a-row is coming up where we will absolutely be tested again, but we welcome the opportunity to click on from this trip and play at home in front of a crowd."
Paige Millstone led Drake with three shots in the match with one attempt on goal. Meanwhile,
Alma Beaton and
Zoey Mahoney both recorded a pair of shots and freshman
Alexa Aylward had an attempt come on net as well.
Kate Hopma saved four shots in goal.
The Bulldogs will be back on the pitch next for their home opener versus Iowa State on Thursday, August 20. Kickoff from Mediacom Stadium is slated for 5 p.m.
