Men's Golf Ties for Ninth at Wildcat Invitational

Bulldogs complete first event of the fall slate from Manhattan, Kansas

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Drake men's golf team concluded its first tournament of the fall season on Tuesday afternoon and finished tied for ninth place at the Wildcat Invitational.

The Bulldogs shot a team total of 899 (299-304-296) over two days of play and 54 holes. Drake tied with Incarnate Word on the team leaderboard at 899, while St. Thomas (MN) took home the team title with a final score of 866 (290-293-283).

Of the four Missouri Valley Conference teams competing at the Wildcat Invitational, Drake had the second-best finish. Southern Illinois finished ahead of the Bulldogs in fourth place (889, 290-307-292), while Bradley placed 11th (908, 307-302-299) and Northern Iowa ended in 15th (946, 300-333-313).

"It was good to get out and compete after three weeks of practice," Drake head coach Matt Lewis said. "The course played extremely difficult with the strong winds, especially in rounds two and three. Everyone had some up and down moments, but overall, we were a little disappointed in our finish. We can take away many positives but also learned some things we need to work on."

On the individual leaderboard, sophomore Luke Bohmer recorded the best finish for the Bulldogs tying for 32nd. Bohmer carded rounds of 73-79-73 for his finishing score of 9-over, 225.

Finishing one stroke behind Bohmer at 226 and tying for 39th was Jake Weissenburger. The senior started off the tournament with a first round score of 80 but bounced back with an even par 72 in the second round and a 2-over 74 in the final round. Weissenburger's 72 in the second round marked the lowest individual round for the Bulldogs in the tournament.

Dylan Drogemuller was next on the leaderboard for Drake and he tied for 43rd at 227, one stroke behind Weissenburger and just two strokes behind Bohmer. Drogemuller went for rounds of 74-78-75 during the tournament.

Finishing up for the Bulldogs were Sam Johnson and Sammy Bonaobra. Johnson tied for 54th at 231 (77-80-74) and Bonaobra landed in a tie for 63rd at 237 (75-75-87).

Jake Olson from South Dakota State claimed individual medalist honors shooting 5-under, 211.

The Bulldogs head to Madison, Wisconsin for their next event, the Badger Invitational. The tournament will take place Sep. 27-29 from University Ridge Golf Course.
