2004 DRAKE RELAYS RELEASE #27
DES MOINES, IOWA — Dawane Wallace, who owns the second fastest time in the world this year in the 110 hurdles, will make his Drake Relays debut competing in the men's invitational 110 hurdles during the Saturday (April 24) session.
Former NCAA champion Aubrey Herring, who was ranked No. 9 in the U.S. in 2002, also will compete in the event, along with Micah Harris, 24; and Karl Jennings, 24, of Canada.
Wallace was clocked in 13.42 in the Sea Ray Relays last Saturday in Knoxville, Tenn., which only trails the 13.13 clocking by Larry Wade set at the Texas Relays April 3 on the 2004 world list. Wallace has been ranked in the top 10 in the U.S. since 2000, including a No. 8 ranking last year. He was eighth in the 60 hurdles at the 2004 U.S. Indoor Championships.
Wallace was ranked fifth in the U.S. in 2001 and ninth in the world after finishing seventh in the 2001 World Outdoor Championships. He was fourth in the 2001 U.S. Outdoor Championships in a personal best of 13.22.
As a senior at Tennessee, Wallace was second in the 110 hurdles at the 1999 NCAA Outdoor Championships and third in the 1999 World University games.
This will mark only the fourth time in the 95-year history of the Drake Relays that an invitational men's short hurdle race will be contested. Former Southern Cal standout Jack Davis won the inaugural invitational short hurdle race – the 120-yard hurdles – at the 1954 Drake Relays. Herring won the invitational 110 hurdles at the 2002 Drake Relays in 13.76 seconds, while finishing third last year.
Herring, 25, was ranked No. 7 in the U.S. in 2001. He was fifth in the 2001 U.S. Outdoor Championships and also competed in the 2001 World University Games in Beijing, China. Herring won the 60 hurdles as a senior at Indiana State in the 2001 NCAA Indoor Championships and was second in the 110 hurdles at the 2000 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Herring was runner-up in voting for the 2001 Drake Relays outstanding men's performer award. He won the 2001 Drake Relays university-college 110 hurdles (13.77), while anchoring Indiana State to victory in the university-college shuttle hurdle relay (55.06). He also was sixth in the 60 hurdles at the 2002 U.S. Indoor Championships.
Jennings owns a season best of 13.53 in the 110 hurdles en route to a third-place finish behind Wallace at the Sea Ray Relays. Harris owns a personal best of 13.43 set in 2003.
