Football Rallies For Win Over Saint Mary's

DES MOINES, IOWA Drakes defense held Saint Marys to just 97 yards total offense in the second half to rally from a 13-0 deficit en route to posting a 20-13 nonconference victory Saturday at Drake Stadium.

The Bulldogs, who snapped a two-game losing streak, improved their record to 5-6. Saint Marys fell to 1-9 under first-year coach Vincent White.

Drakes defense forced four turnovers and collected four quarterback sacks, totaling 27 yards in losses. The Bulldogs also stopped Saint Marys short on a fourth down and one-yard gamble midway through the fourth quarter at the Drake 41 yardline.

Drake senior Jonathan Taylor (Council Bluffs/Thomas Jefferson), who enjoyed his 12th 100-yard rushing game of his career, helped fuel the comeback with fourth-quarter touchdown runs of 14 and one yards.

Taylor finished with a game-high 114 yards rushing in 30 carries. He set a Drake single-season nonscholarship record with 291 rushing carries, breaking the previous mark of 283 by Jason Grove in 1987. Taylor also moved into No. 4 on the all-time Drake career rushing list with 3,135 yards surpassing the immortal Johnny Bright who gained 3,134 yards from 1949-51.

Junior Jason Jones (Kansas City, Mo./Hickman Mills) also set a Drake single-season touchdown reception mark with his 13th scoring catch when he caught an 80-yard pass from Bill Castonzo (Lake Zurich, Ill.) with 10:53 left in the third quarter.

Castonzo, making his first collegiate start at quarterback, struggled throughout the first half, completing just four of 18 passes while throwing two interceptions.

On Drakes second possession of the game, Castonzo had a pass intercepted by Saint Marys Travis Menke at the Drake 37 yardline. Stevelan Harper returned another Castonzo interception 82 yards for a touchdown with 4:51 left in the first quarter to give the Gaels a 7-0 lead.

A 15-yard scoring burst by Chris Tillery with 12:27 left in the second quarter, capped a nine-play, 55-yard scoring march that pushed Saint Marys lead to 13-0.

Castonzo teamed up with Jones on the 80-yard scoring pass on Drakes third play of the second half to pull Drake within 13-7.

A 27-yard interception return by Jace Denison (Thornburg/Tri-County) set up Taylors first touchdown early in the fourth quarter.

Taylors second touchdown gallop came after Nate Zittergruen (West Des Moines Valley) recovered a fumble by Saint Marys reserve quarterback Parker Mangum at the Gaels 15 yardline with 6:31 left in the fourth quarter.

Jones finished with three receptions for 98 yards. Kenny Davis rushed for 36 yards in nine carries for Saint Marys which played without the services of its leading rusher Clint Wilson who was nursing a concussion.

Senior linebacker Matt Smith (Indianola) and end Kevin Costello(West Des Moines Valley) each had two quarterback sacks for Drake. Junior cornerback Eric Papp (Cedar Lake, Ind.) and freshman linebacker Nick Ross (Atlantic) had a game-high 11 tackles apiece for the Bulldogs.

Drake will close out the season playing host to Waldorf next Saturday.

Ryan Horvath had a 36-yard field goal attempt miss wide left late in the third quarter.
