DES MOINES, IOWA Sophomore fullback Matt Goodwin (Cambridge, Ill.) scored on a pair of one-yard runs to key Drake to a 16-6 victory past William Penn Saturday night In the first night football game played at Drake Stadium since 1960.
The Bulldogs improved their record at Drake Stadium to 52-10-1 dating back to 1992.
Drake rolled up 316 yards total offense, including 191 rushing. Drake freshman Scott Phayadong (Des Moines East) rushed for a career-high 107 yards in carries, including a 74-yard scamper in the second quarter.
Drake (1-1) will continue its three game homestand playing host to Wisconsin-Platteville Saturday. William Penn will play at Southern Illinois next Saturday.
Goodwin gave Drake a 6-0 lead on a one-yard touchdown plunge with 9:00 left in the third quarter. The touchdown was set up when quarterback Connor Jostes (Iowa City High) rifled a 38- yard pass to a diving
Jason Jones (Kansas City, Mo.) at the one-yard line.
"That pass broke the ice and was the play of the game," said Drake football coach Rob Ash. "We were able to convert that into a touchdown."
Drake junior Tyler McGlade (Council Bluffs) rounded out Drake's scoring with a 38-yard field goal with 14:51 left in the game. Goodwin finished with 49 yards rushing.
Jostes passed for 125 yards to surpass the 3,000 yard passing plateau in his career. He has now thrown for 3,028 yards. Jones moved up to No. 3 on the Drake career reception yardage list with 2,176 yards.
Junior tight end James Mickley (Geneseo, Ill.) caught four passes for 47 yards to lead the Bulldogs. Marvin Mabry had a game-high five receptions for 55 yards for William Penn.
Drake's defense forced William Penn into three turnovers. Sophomore free safety Ryan Frehse (Denison) thwarted a William Penn scoring drive with an interception in the second quarter. Sophomore linebacker Nick Ross (Atlantic) led the Bulldogs with 12 tackles, including nine solo hits.
Senior defensive tackle Brant Parriott (Newton) added eight tackles, including six solo hits.
Drakes Brad Peters (Rochelle, Ill.) recovered a fumble on a punt return at the William Penn 17 yardline but McGlade had a 35-yard field goal attempt go wide right with 2:25 left in the second quarter.
James Jackson led William Penn with 54 yards rushing in 17 carries. Jer'ronne Jackson scored the lone touchdown for William Penn (1-2) on a five-yard burst with 7:05 left in the game.
