Rushing Duo; Defense Keys Football Team In Regular Season Finale

JACKSONVILLE, FLA. -- While Central Iowa was recovering from its first snow of the season, Drake used a fourth-quarter blizzard to seal a 47-28 Pioneer Football League victory past Jacksonville in its regular season finale Saturday.

The Bulldogs, surviving 84-degree heat, outscored Jacksonville, 13-0, in the fourth quarter while forcing two turnovers.

The win improved Drake's record to 9-2 the second most victories in school history trailing 10-win campaigns by the 1981 and 2004 Bulldog teams.

"What a great season," said Drake football coach Rob Ash, whose team also clinched second place in the PFL with a record. "I know the players in our post-game huddle were happy. Nine wins in a season is a terrific accomplishment for any team at any level. We worked hard to get that today."

Drake also closed out the regular season with a perfect 4-0 road record, marking the first time a football team went undefeated on the road in the regular season since the 1969 Bulldogs went 5-0-1.

Junior fullback Willie Cashmore tied a Drake record with five touchdowns, while sophomore Scott Phaydavong rushed for more than 200 yards for the fifth time in his career.

But in the end Ash lauded his defense which forced two turnovers in winning its sixth straight game against Jacksonville.

Drake sophomore strong safety Andy Green came up with two interceptions in less than a six-minute span midway through the fourth quarter to preserve the victory.

He returned his second pass theft 65 yards for a touchdown with 3 minutes 37 seconds left to account for the final margin.

"At the end of the game, in the heat of Florida, is when our defense performed its best," Ash added. "When the game was on the line coming down the stretch, our defense came through. We expected it to be a four-quarter game."

Drake also used a bit of trickery, relying on a fake punt to jump start the second half.

Facing a fourth down and three-yard situation on their own 49 yardline during their first offensive series of the second half, the Bulldogs caught Jacksonville off guard when upback Nick Ross lofted a 17-yard pass to Tyler Marley for a first down.

Two plays later, Cashmore score his final touchdown of the game on a three-yard plunge to give Drake a 34-21 lead with 10:32 left in the third quarter.

"I don't think I have ever been more nervous about a play than that," said Ash. "We hoped we would have a situation to use it. It proved to be a momentum booster for us and Marley (Tyler) made a nice catch. We had prepared for that fake punt all week in practice."

Phaydavong reset his school single-season rushing record by gaining 216 yards in 27 carries to push his 2006 totals to 1,613 yards bettering the previous school mark he set of 1,550 yards last year.

Cashmore netted 101 yards on the ground in 19 carries to mark the third time this season Drake has had two players rush for more than 100 yards in the same game.

Cashmore scored four touchdowns in the first half. Phaydavong, who enjoyed his ninth 100-yard plus rushing game of the season, had 107 yards on the ground in the first quarter on just 10 carries.

"They were a great one-two punch," Ash added. "They were really impressive in the first half. Willie (Cashmore) has a great knack for finding the endzone. Our offensive line did a great job"

Drake scored on its opening drive, marching 80 yards in 11 plays capped by an eight-yard run by Cashmore with 10:47 left in the first quarter. Phaydavong rushed for 36 yards on five carries in the drive.

After Jacksonville scored on consecutive possessions to grab a 14-7 edge with 2:22 left in the first quarter, Cashmore took over again.

He had second-quarter touchdown runs of two, 15 and five yards to stake Drake to a 27-14 lead.

Drake gained 505 yards total offense, marking the fourth time it had gained more than 500 yards in a game this season.

Tight end Daniel Marx and receiver Travis Hardgraves each caught four passes.

Ross and senior linebacker Jimmy Adams led Drake with 12 tackles apiece.
