Football Team Forces 6 Turnovers in Home Finale Romp

DES MOINES, IOWA Junior cornerback Poul Collins (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) tied a school record with three interceptions as the Drake defense forced Davidson into a season-high six turnovers en route to a 35-15 Pioneer Football League victory Saturday.

The victory assured Drake of a second-place finish in the PFL entering its regular season finale at Jacksonville next Saturday. Twenty-three seniors, including 12 starters, appeared in the final game at Drake Stadium

The Bulldogs improved to 8-2 overall, including a 5-1 conference mark. Davidson, which had a four-game winning streak snapped, fell to 5-4 overall, including a 4-2 league record.

For the second time this season junior running backs Willie Cashmore (Kansas City, Mo./St. Pius X) and Scott Phaydavong (Des Moines, Iowa/East) each rushed for more than 100 yards in the same game. Cashmore gained 130 yards rushing in 20 carries with scoring runs of one and 16 yards.

Phaydavong enjoyed his 24th career 100-yard plus rushing game by gaining 109 yards on the ground in 22 carries, including touchdown runs of 21 and 39 yards.

Collins, who was a running back in 2005, returned his third interception of the game 26 yards to the Davidson one yardline where Cashmore scored on the first play from scrimmage to stake Drake to a 28-3 lead with 6:08 left in the third quarter.

Drake senior Travis Hardgraves (Sioux City, Iowa/West), making his first career start, had a career high eight receptions for a career-best 173 yards, including a 74-yard scoring bomb from quarterback Cole Ingle (Runnels, Iowa/Southeast Polk) in the second quarter.

Ingle, making his third straight start at quarterback, passed for a career-high 299 yards, completing 19 of 36 passes. Senior Shea Moroni (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) caught seven passes for 64 yards.

Drake rolled up 559 yards total offense, while Davidson had 400 yards total offense.

Davidson quarterback Ryan Alexander, who entered the game ranked seventh in the NCAA I-AA in total offense (264.75 yards avg. per game), tied a school record by throwing five interceptions. He had entered the game having thrown just four interceptions the entire season.

Senior linebacker Brian Conway (Waukee, Iowa) and sophomore strong safety Andy Green (Atlantic, Iowa) also had interceptions for Drake.

Sophomore free safety Jacob Craight (Mount Vernon, Iowa) and senior linebacker Jimmy Adams (Kansas City, Mo./Park Hill) led Drake with 10 tackles apiece and one forced fumble. Craig also recovered a Davidson fumble at the Drake 17 yardline midway through the first half.

Drake sophomore kicker Logan Rees (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) missed field goals of 36 yards in the first quarter and 24 yards to end the first half.

Senior tailback Jonathon Hubbard led Davidson with 89 yards rushing in 16 carries, including a three-yard touchdown run with 12:11 left in the game.

Alexander threw for 229 yards including an 11-yard third-quarter touchdown pass to Beaux Jones.
