Phaydavong Repeats As Co-Offensive Player Of Year At Channing Smith Football Banquet

DES MOINES, IOWA ? Junior running back Scott Phaydavong (Des Moines East) was a repeat selection as the co offensive player of the year for the Drake football team during the 109th annual Channing Smith Awards banquet Saturday at the Drake Olmsted Center.

Phaydavong, a three-time first-team Sports Network Mid-Major 1-A All-American choice, shared the honor with senior fullback Matt Goodwin (Cambridge, Ill.) and junior offensive tackle Matt Haas (Iowa City, Iowa/West). Both Haas and Phaydavong also earned first-team All-Pioneer Football League honors.

Senior linebacker Brian Conway (Waukee, Iowa), sophomore safety Jacob Craig (Mount Vernon, Iowa) and senior defensive end Kevin Jennings (Lockport, Ill.) shared the defensive player of the year honors. Craig and Jennings were first-team All-PFL selections.

The Bulldogs, under coach Rob Ash, posted a 9-2 record this fall, including a 6-1 second-place finish in the Pioneer Football League.

Goodwin also was named co-special teams player of the year along with redshirt freshman Calen Hunt (Littleton, Colo.) and junior Brandon Millard (Mason City, Iowa) .

Senior running back DeCarlos Love (Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn) was named recipient of the Gene Schultz Award which annually honors an upperclassman who displays the highest standards of leadership, citizenship and personal conduct on the field, and in academic and campus activities.

Freshmen Tim Harvey (Evanston, Ill./Loyola Academy), Ben Morrison (Long Grove, Ill./Stevenson) and Dain Taylor (Highlands Park, Colo./Mountain Vista) were named the Defensive Scout Team Players of the Year. Redshirt freshman Jonathan Jones (Bolingbrook, Ill./Benet Academy) and Steve Platek (Arlington Heights, Ill./John Hersey) were named the Offensive Scout Team Players of the Year.
