Townley Scores Two As The Bulldogs Notch First MVC Win Of Season Over UNI

DES MOINES, IOWA ? Sophomore Crystal Townley (Colorado Springs, Colo.) scored two goals in Drake's 23-shot bombardment of Missouri Valley Conference foe Northern Iowa, 5-1, Sunday night at the Cownie Soccer Complex.

The five goals scored was a season high for the Bulldogs who improved to 4-7-2 overall with a 1-1-0 conference mark.

Sophomore Melissa Lewis (Edina, Minn.) scored Drake's first goal in the seventh minute (6:31) on an empty net after she dribbled around Northern Iowa goalkeeper Heidi O'Mara.

Townley scored her first goal, unassisted, in the 33rd (32:26) minute on a shot across the box to the far post just beating O'Mara.

Senior Morgan Virgilio (Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) scored her first goal of the season off a feed from senior Sarah Foote (Arvada, Colo) 15-yards out to the far post.

Senior Nikki Thaden (Clive, Iowa) took a feed from Foote in the 66th minute (65:16) to move Drake to the 4-0 lead. Thaden's shot was from the top of the box 10-yards out.

Townley scored the final goal of the match in the 80th minute (79:03) on a feed from senior Julie Hickman (Littleton, Colo.) and freshman Ali Walsh (Florissant, Mo.). Townley sent the shot at O'Mara who got a glove on the ball, but it ricocheted into the upper right of the net.

Drake took 17 shots on goal against the Panthers. UNI managed to fire off only five shots.

Foote led seven Drake attackers with seven shots, all of which were on goal.

O'Mara made 12 saves for the Panthers. Sophomore Jenny Schroeder (Albuquerque, N.M.) made three saves in goal for the Bulldogs in her second complete game shutout of the season.

The game was slowed quite a bit with wet field conditions, but Drake managed to play 22 players in the match. The Bulldogs recognized their seven seniors in a pre-game ceremony. Foote, Thaden and Virgillio were honored along with Sinead Brown (Toronto, Ontario) and Cindi Brenner (Hoffman Estates, Ill.)

The Bulldogs return to action on Thursday (Oct. 18) at Evansville.
