Ali Walsh (Florissant, Mo.) scored the golden goal in the 93rd minute (92:54) to give the Drake women's soccer team a 4-3 overtime victory over Evansville Friday afternoon. The match was originally scheduled to be played Thursday night, but had to be rescheduled due to lightning and a unplayable surface. Senior
Sarah Foote (Arvada, Colo.) fed Walsh the ball to score the goal.
Junior
Katie Sauer (Scottsdale, Ariz.) tied the game at three-all in the 85th minute (84:53) when she turned and fired off an 18-yard blast off a feed from senior
Nikki Thaden (Clive, Iowa).
“I think it was a really good performance by both teams and it was our team's determination that came out to help us get the win,” said Sauer. “I think we had the heart and soul and came together as a team to get those last two goals.”
Drake scored its first goal in the eighth minute (7:47). Sophomore
Melissa Lewis (Edina, Minn.) took a feed from Walsh and Foote, taking a shot from the right side to the far post.
The Purple Aces rattled off two goals in the 47th (46:28) and 50th minutes (49:49) to take a 2-1 advantage early in the second half.
Sophomore
Crystal Townley (Colorado Springs, Colo.) scored 12 seconds (50:01) later to even the match at 2-2. Townly accepted the ball from Walsh and got behind the defense to score the goal.
Evansville again answered back in the 62nd minute (61:26) to take a 3-2 lead before Sauer's goal sent the match into overtime.
“Evansville was a very dangerous team and we feel fortunate to come away with the win,” said assistant coach
Lindsey Horner. “We were persistent and resilient on the field and our bench helped to rally the team for the win.”
Sophomore
Jenny Schroeder (Albuquerque, N.M.) made four saves in goal for the Bulldogs. Her counterpart Theresa Bagby made two saves for the Purple Aces.
The Purple Aces outshot Drake 14-10, including taking eight shots in the second half.
With the win, Drake (5-7-2, 2-1-0) ended a yearlong unbeaten streak by Evansville and won their sixth contest in a row over the Purple Aces.
Drake continues its weekend MVC road trip with a match at Missouri State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
