DES MOINES, IOWA ? Freshman
Angela Bys (Marion, Iowa/Marion) hammered a career-best 33 kills to lift Drake to a come-from-behind 3-2 (24-30, 30-20, 30-26, 19-30, 15-6) Missouri Valley Conference volleyball victory over Bradley on Saturday evening (Oct. 20).
Bys surpassed the 30-kill plateau for the second time in her young career, having reached the milestone with 30 versus Iowa (Sept. 7). She remains the only player in the MVC to have recorded 30 kills in a match this season.
The victory snaps a six-match losing streak for the Bulldogs and extends their record to 6-16 overall, including 3-8 in league play. The loss was the ninth in 10 contests for the Braves and drops their ledger to 2-21 overall and 1-10 in The Valley.
Bradley overcame a 6-1 deficit in the opening frame to notch a 30-24 victory.
The Bulldogs responded with authority in the second stanza as they broke open a 14-13 game with a 7-0 run sparked by three kills from Bys. The advantage swelled to as many as 10 points before the Blue and White had squared the match with a 30-20 triumph.
Game three featured five ties before Drake went on an 8-0 skein to erase an 18-16 deficit and propel the Bulldogs to a 30-26 decision in the third frame.
As good as Drake looked in game three, it appeared out of sorts in the fourth game and Bradley clobbered the ball at a .324 clip to just a .023 hitting percentage by the Bulldogs en route to squaring the tilt at two apiece with a 30-19 win.
Drake showed no ill effects of game four as the Blue and White methodically attacked the Braves in the deciding frame to collect their first season sweep of Bradley since the 1998 campaign.
Bys made her strongest argument yet for her selection as the Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Year with a 33-kill, 12-dig performance. She finished the affair with a stellar .357 hitting percentage.
