MILWAUKEE, WIS. ? Sophomore
Garrett Webb (Prairie Village, Kan.) headed a long serve from
Kurt Larson (Olathe, Kan.) to score the winning goal in the 88th (87:49) minute as the Drake men's soccer team beat Marquette, 1-0, Wednesday night in its final tune up before entering Missouri Valley Conference men's soccer action next week.
“To go on the road against a quality Big East Conference opponent, which was coming off a good win over Cincinnati, is a tremendous achievement," said Drake head coach
Sean Holmes. “To be fair, neither team was fantastic. Both of us looked like we played two hard games only 72 hours ago, but for us to be able to put in an average win on the road is a tremendous achievement.”
In a night seemingly meant for the record books, Bulldogs senior goalkeeper
Phillip Breuer (Port Washington, Wis.) made three saves to become the Drake career leader with his 15th career solo shutout.
“It is a nice accolade for Phillip because he has worked so hard, to do it in his hometown before friends and family makes it extra special,” commented Holmes.
Holmes also recorded his 150th career collegiate victory, moving his overall coaching record to 150-113-20 including a 72-87-18 mark at Drake.
“I'm proud of getting to this milestone, but I am more proud of the fact that every year we graduate great kids who are ready for their next level of challenge, whether it be social, professional or athletic,” said Holmes.
Drake outshot the Golden Eagles, 8-5, taking four shots on goal and five shots in the second frame. Webb led the Bulldog effort with three shots, two of them falling on goal. Sophomore
Calvin Clark (Overland Park, Kan.) chipped in with two shots for the Bulldogs.
“For Webb to score the winner after taking tons of abuse is nice for him. Game in and game out, he gets absolutely battered. So for him to still be going strong in the 88th minute is a sign of his quality,” said Holmes. “Clark and
Luke Frieberg are without a doubt one of the best center-combos in the Midwest. They organize, they fight, they are virtually unbeatable.”
“Now we have a welcome seven-day rest to get ready for our grueling conference schedule. In conference play everyone starts out 0-0-0. We will prepare accordingly.”
The Bulldogs earned their seventh win of the season (7-3-1) surpassing their total win production of last season (six) with seven matches still to be played. Drake begins MVC play Oct. 10, traveling to Eastern Illinois.
