DES MOINES, IOWA. ? A disappointing end to its home campaign for the Drake volleyball team came on Monday evening (Nov. 5) as South Dakota State rolled to a 3-0 (30-25, 30-28, 30-25) victory over the Bulldogs.
The win allowed the Jackrabbits to improve their record to 21-8 on the campaign, while dropping Drake to 7-20.
The statistics in the contest indicated a nearly even match, but it was South Dakota State's control at the net that ultimately won the contest for the Jackrabbits. South Dakota State registered a .311 hitting mark, while committing only 12 errors and limited the Bulldogs to a .156 attack percentage.
The Jackrabbits hitting numbers continued to rise in each successive game ranging from .224 in game one to .417 in the deciding stanza. For Drake, it posted hitting numbers of .146, .214 and .118, respectively in games one, two and three.
Playing in their final home matches, seniors Samantha Nelson (Ceresco, Neb./Raymond Central) collected nine kills, while fellow senior Sarah Schuster (Indianola, Iowa/Indianola) notched her sixth double-double of the campaign with a 42-assist, 12-dig effort.
Sophomore Emily Madden (Van Meter, Iowa/Adel DeSoto Minburn) and freshman Angela Bys (Marion, Iowa/Marion) shared top team honors with 13 kills apiece. Madden chipped in 10 digs to finish with her team-leading eighth double-double of the season.
Kristina Martin directed all players with 14 kills for the Jackrabbits.
Freshman Alana Wittenburg (Readlyn, Iowa/Wapsie Valley) notched a match-best 22 digs for Drake.
The Bulldogs bettered South Dakota State in assists (44-43), service aces (5-3) and digs (59-48), while the Jackrabbits captured the advantage in kills (53-49) and blocks (10-5-5.0).
Up next for Drake is a date with No. 24 Wichita State on Friday (Nov. 9). Match time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
