PEORIA, ILL. ? The night belonged to sophomore
Chelsea Lauersdorf (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) and the Bulldogs as Drake snapped a 12-match volleyball losing streak to Bradley registering its first road triumph at Robertson Field House since the 1998 campaign on the strength of Lauersdorf's triple-double (30-assists, 22 kills and 10 digs) in a 3-2 (30-25, 28-30, 18-30, 32-30, 17-15) victory over the Braves on Friday evening (Sept. 21).
Drake has now won two straight contests and improves its ledger to 4-9 on the year, including 1-1 in the Missouri Valley Conference. The setback was the seventh straight for Bradley, who falls to 1-12 overall and 0-3 in league action.
The Bulldogs took the opening frame by a score of 30-25 but soon were forced to muster a comeback as the Braves won games two and three by 30-28 and 30-18 scores, respectively.
Game four appeared to be headed in Bradley's favor as the Braves raced out to a 12-6 lead before the Bulldogs forged back to take the lead, 17-16, on a kill from sophomore
Emily Madden (Van Meter, Iowa/Adel DeSoto Minburn).
The momentum proved to be fleeting as Bradley recorded eight of the next 11 points to regain a 24-19 lead. Undeterred, the Blue and White fought back to square the game at 25 on a kill by freshman
Nicole Brown (Appleton, Wis./Appleton).
Trailing by one, 30-29, with Amy Reichel serving for match point, senior
Samantha Nelson (Ceresco, Neb./Raymond Central) notched a kill to square the frame before Drake won the game on the strength of kills by Madden and Nelson.
All tied at two games apiece, the Bulldogs jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the deciding stanza. As they did all night, the Braves rallied back to regain the advantage, 11-8. Bradley served for match point but was denied one more time as two attack errors and a Madden kill propelled the Blue and White to a come-from-behind five-game triumph.
Registering her first career triple-double was Lauersdorf, who notched a 30-assist, 22-kill, 10-dig effort. Her 22 kills shattered her previous career high in kills established earlier this season versus Furman (Sept. 1).
Joining her with double-figure kills was Nelson, freshman
Angela Bys (Marion, Iowa/Marion), Madden and Brown with 15, 13, 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Six Braves finished with 10 or more kills, led by Emily Austin's 15.
In her return to the line-up from injury, senior
Sarah Schuster (Indianola, Iowa/Indianola) distributed a team-high 34 assists, while freshman
Alana Wittenburg (Readlyn, Iowa/Wapsie Valley) collected a team-best 14 digs.
Bradley outslugged the Bulldogs (.255 to .210), but despite advantages in kills (79-75), assists (76-70), service aces (10-6) and digs (72-58) it was not able to garner the victory.
The Bulldogs close out their road swing on Saturday (Sept. 22) as Drake faces an in-state showdown at Northern Iowa. The match gets underway at 7:00 p.m. from the McLeod Center in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
