BOULDER, COLO. ? The Drake women's soccer team fell to host Colorado, 1-0, in overtime to complete action at the Colorado Tournament Sunday.
“We didn't deserve to lose,” said Drake head coach
Corbin Stone. “An unfortunate part of soccer is you can play and do what you need to do, but just fall short. We had chances to finish the game.
Nikki Thaden had a shot where everyone thought it had gone in, but one of the players cleared it off the line at the last minute which is unfortunate, but the few chances we did have were quality not quantity.”
Colorado's Michelle Wenino broke the 96-minute (96:52) stalemate when she took a feed from Gianna DeSaverio to beat Drake goalkeeper
Jenny Schroeder (Albuquerque, N.M.) and earn the victory for the Buffaloes.
Schroder turned in an excellent performance in goal for the Bulldogs making six saves.
“Both games this weekend were very tactical in nature. It was perhaps the most thoughtful, organized and disciplined we have played as a team in the history of the program. Our defending was absolutely brilliant, our goalkeeping was top notch and we were good on the break at times,” said Stone.
Colorado outshot the Bulldogs, 27-8, but took only eight shots on goal. The Buffaloes took 11 shots in both the first and second periods.
“Had we been a little more persistent getting another pass before trying to play the final ball, we might have been able to finish the game. I feel really sad for our team, because most of them played with such determination, heart and tactical acumen, they just didn't deserve this,” added Stone.
Seniors
Sarah Foote (Arvada, Colo.),
Sinead Brown (Toronto, Ontario) and
Nikki Thaden (Clive, Iowa) took two shots each to help the Drake effort.
“We may be a 1-4-2 team, but that is against three Big Ten teams, three Big 12 teams, one from the SEC and one from the Big East. That is going to build confidence, character and competitiveness. Knowing that we can compete with these teams, but we can beat them is enough to prove the difference in the rest of the season,” concluded Stone.
The Bulldogs return to the friendly confines of Cownie Soccer Complex for a match with South Dakota State on Friday at 6 p.m. and face Loyola-Chicago on Sunday at noon.
