CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA ? Drake freshman golfer Cody Schweinefus (Decorah, Iowa) fired a four-under par 67-69=136 to finish just one stroke out of first place in the annual Big Four Championship Tuesday at the Elmcrest Country Club.
Iowa State senior Chris Baker fired a school-record 64 to help the Cyclones capture the Big Four Championship by 13 shots (550). Iowa finished second at 563, followed by Drake (564) and Northern Iowa (568).
"I thought for our first event of the year with four newcomers, while playing on the road, we scored fairly well" said Drake golf coach Scott Bohlender. "We played smart and didn't make a lot of mistakes. We lost the tournament on the putting green. We couldn't get anything in the hole
Baker had a two-round score of 135 (71-64) to clip Schweinefus, who was a two-time winner of the Iowa Class 3A state high school boys title. Schweinefus had a bogey on No. 17, while Baker made a birdie. Both golfers finished the second round with a par on the No. 18 hole.
Drake also received outstanding performances from sophomore Luke Joy (Dorset, England) who tied for fourth with a 71-68=139 and freshman Ben Freeman (Fargo, N.D./South) who tied for seventh with a 71-71=142.
"We'll work on our short game this week in practice," added Bohlender. "We need to get a little sharper on our five to 10 foot putts."
