DES MOINES, IOWA ? Iowa State parlayed a .494 hitting percentage into a 3-0 (30-19, 30-14, 30-14) victory over Drake to capture the Hampton Inn State of Iowa Collegiate Volleyball Challenge at the Knapp Center on Saturday evening (Sept. 8).
The win pushes the Cyclones' ledger to 6-4 on the campaign, while handing the Bulldogs their third straight setback to stand at 2-5 overall.
Tournament Most Valuable Player Mary Bisenius sparked Iowa State registering a match-high 10 kills en route to recording a .529 attack mark. Equaling her with 10 kills was Jen Malcolm, who torched the ball at a match-best .643 clip.
An eight-kill effort from freshman
Angela Bys (Marion, Iowa/Marion) led Drake. Freshman
Alana Wittenburg (Readlyn, Iowa/Wapsie Valley) notched a team-high seven digs, while sophomore
Chelsea Lauersdorf (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) earned all-tournament laurels after distributing 25 assists.
Statistically, Iowa State dominated the Bulldogs in kills (44-33), assists (40-29), digs (33-25), service aces (7-2) and blocks (15.5-1.0).
In the opener of the evening session, LSU held off a feisty Iowa squad, 3-2
Joining Bisenius and Lauersdorf on the all-tournament team were Iowa State's Kaylee Manns, Elena Martinez and Kyna Washington of LSU, and Emily Hiza of Iowa.
Drake now turns its attention to the start of Missouri Valley Conference play as the Bulldogs host Creighton on Tuesday (Sept. 11). First serve is slated for 7:00 p.m.
