OCT. 14, 2008DES MOINES, IOWA -- Jona Andrade's breakaway goal in the second overtime allowed Western Illinois to stun No. 24 ranked Drake, 2-1, Tuesday night at the Cownie Soccer Complex.
The Leathernecks drew Drake goal keeper
Michael Drozd (Hartwood Heights, Ill.) off line which led to the winning goal at the 102nd minute.
"It was awful disappointing," said Drake coach
Sean Holmes. "Western Illinois is a very good team, but I thought we dominated for the better part of three periods.
"As has been our pattern we haven't turned position opportunities into goals. It is our inability to finish off plays that has been costly."
Junior
Kevin Shrout (Lee's Summit, Mo.) gave Drake a 1-0 lead on a free kick at 32:55. Shrout had a game-high five shots, including two shots on goal.
But Western Illinois tied the match in the 56th minute on a goal by sophomore Cosimo Patano on a rebound blast from 35 yards out.
"We need to be able to clear the line under pressure better," said Holmes.
The Bulldogs, who fell to 9-3, outshot Western Illinois, 15-10. Western Illinois improved to 9-3-2
Freshman
Hunter Kennedy (Cedar Rapids, Iowa), sophomore
Matt Kuhn (Raytown, Mo.), and freshman
Thomas Ostrander (Fort Dodge, Iowa) had two shots apiece.
Drake resumes Missouri Valley Conference action Saturday, playing host to Eastern Illinois at 7 p.m. at the Cownie Soccer Complex.
