Drake Sets Scoring Record, Powers Past North Dakota

DES MOINES, IOWA -- Junior forward Elizabeth Woerle (Coon Rapids, Minn.) set a school record with four goals as the Drake women's soccer team coasted to its sixth straight victory with a 9-0 romp past North Dakota Sunday at Drake Stadium.

The Bulldogs set a school record for most goals in a game, eclipsing the previous mark of seven against Indiana State, Oct. 25, 2007.

Junior goal keeper Jenny Schroeder (Albuquerque, N.M.) and freshman Kourtney Arnold (Norwalk, Iowa) combined to record Drake's fifth straight shutout during the winning streak.

“Non-conference games during the conference season can be challenging, but today we were able to put North Dakota on their heels from the start of the game,” said Drake Head Coach Lindsey Horner. “Our starters were not only creating chances, but finishing.”

Drake set a school record with six first-half goals.

Woerle scored three goals in a 2-minute 26 second span early in the first half. She started Drake's scoring with a goal from the top of the box at the 8:04 mark.

Twenty-nine seconds later Woerle had a rebound goal off a feed from freshman Danielle Figliola.

Then at the 10:30 mark she scored on a header off of a free kick by junior Karissa Brown (Encintas, Calif.).

It marked the second straight game in which a Drake player recorded a hat trick. Junior Crystal Townley (Colorado Springs, Colo.) scored all three of Drake's goals in a 3-0 home victory against South Dakota Friday night.

“Our bench played with a lot of energy and kept the level of play high for us and once again we were solid defensively,” added Horner.

Figliola pushed Drake's advantage to 4-0 in the 19th minute.

Goals by sophomore Katie Anderson (Naperville, Ill.) and freshman Amanda Wallace (Centennial, Colo.) rounded out the first-half fireworks by Drake.

Woerle tallied her school-record fourth goal on a header at the 62:37 mark.

Drake tied a single-game record with 35 shots. Woerle had seven, including six shots on goal, followed by Townley and Figliola with five shots apiece.

Drake evened its record to 7-7-1, while North Dakota fell to 4-11.

The Bulldogs will close out their six-game home stand, facing Colorado this Friday night at the Cownie Soccer Complex.
