TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Junior forward Melissa Lewis (Edina,
Minn./Edina) had
a goal and an assist as the Drake women's soccer team recorded its seventh
victory in eight games with a 3-0 blanking of Missouri Valley Conference opponent
Indiana State
Sunday in Terra Haute, Ind.
Junior goal keeper Jenny Schroeder (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia) recorded Drake's sixth shutout this season.
“At first we struggled with our final pass in the attack. Once we were
able to fix this we were dangerous and it created space for our midfielders to
possess,” said Drake Head Coach Lindsey Horner
“Our backs worked hard today and were able to handle the number of players Indiana State threw into the attack.”
Drake got on the board in the 13th minute with a goal by Lewis on a
shot from the middle just outside the top of the 18 yard box off of a feed from
Danielle Figliola (Longmont, Colo./Silver Creek) and Blair Nelson (Southlake,
Texas/Carroll).
In almost a carbon copy of the first goal, Crystal Townley (Colorado
Springs, Colo./Palmer), connected in the back of the net off an assist from
Elizabeth Woerle (Coon Rapids, Minn./Meadow Creek) at 42:22.
Amanda Wallace (Centennial, Colo./Cherry Creek), off a pass from Lewis, rounded
out the scoring in the 59th minute. Wallace rebounded a shot by Lewis in the
middle of a scramble in front of the net and sent it in for the score.
“Our first two goals came off of great finishes,” added Horner. “All year we have
talked about rebounding shots and making the most out of loose balls in the box
and today we demonstrated that we are capable and willing to do this which
resulted in our third goal of the match.”
The Bulldogs outshot the Sycamores, 25-15, with Woerle and
Nelson leading Drake with five and four shots, respectively.
Drake evened its record to 8-8-1 (4-1-0 MVC), while Indiana State fell to
3-13-0 (1-4-0 MVC).
The Bulldogs finish the regular season at home, facing Illinois State
Saturday, Nov. 1 at the Cownie Soccer Complex. Game time is scheduled for 1
p.m.
The winner of the match-up, if there is no tie, will share
the conference title with Evansville
as both teams will stand at 5-1 in the league.
