OMAHA, NEB. ? Freshman midfielder Allison Gasparovich scored with 9:15 remaining in the second overtime to give No. 6 seeded Indiana State a 1-0 victory over the third-seeded Drake women's soccer team in the quarterfinal round of the State Farm Missouri Valley Women's soccer tournament Wednesday night.
Gasparovich scored off a free-kick pass from freshman Missy Journot and senior Amanda Gogel, ending Drake's season and giving the Sycamores their first-ever win over the Bulldogs in eight attempts.
“We played very reactive and gave Indiana State too much time and space to play in,” said Drake Head Coach Lindsey Horner.
Drake had two chances to score in the second half, on a free-kick by junior Elizabeth Woerle (Coon Rapids, Minn.) at the 27:39 mark and a one-on-one between junior midfielder Crystal Townley (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Indiana State goalkeeper Emily Lahay that was saved.
In the first overtime Drake had another free kick opportunity ? a pass from Karissa Brown (Encinitas, Calif.) to sophomore Katie Anderson (Naperville, Ill.) that was headed toward the goal but missed high.
Drake had earned a 3-0 victory at Indiana State Oct. 26 in Terre Haute.
Due to lightning and rain conditions the game was suspended for one hour and 12 minutes after the end of the first half.
Drake outshot Indiana State, 22-10, with Woerle recording a game-high seven shots, including two shots on goal.
Townley had four shots, while Anderson had three shots.
Junior goalkeeper Jenny Schroeder (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia) has five saves for Drake.
Drake closed out the season with an 8-10-1 record. Indiana State improves to 4-14-0 and advanced to Friday's semifinal round meeting No. 2 seeded Illinois State.
