DES MOINES, IOWA -- Drake forced three turnovers and recorded a safety en route to closing out its home season with a 19-15 Pioneer Football League victory past Morehead State Saturday.
The Bulldogs, winning their third straight game, improved to 5-4 overall, while presenting first-year coach
Chris Creighton with his 100th career collegiate coaching victory.
Creighton, who owns an overall 100-28 record in 12 years including stops at Ottawa (Kan.) from 1997-2000 and Wabash from 2001-07, downplayed the special milestone.
"It is awkward because no one person has ever won a game," said Creighton. "It has always been about team effort and I've been fortunate to be surrounded by some good players and good coaches."
Quarterback
Cole Ingle (Runnells, Iowa), who was one of nine seniors playing in his final home game, surpassed the 3,000 career passing yardage mark.
Ingle, making his second straight start, completed 15 of 25 passes for 196 yards including a 38-yard touchdown strike to freshman Andrew Blackmon (Florissant, Mo.) that gave Drake a 10-6 advantage it never relinquished.
At one point during the game Ingle completed 10 straight passes.
"It was senior day and what we really wanted was for these players to leave Drake Stadium on a high note," Creighton added. "They are such a worthy group who have poured so much into this program during my first year here."
Drake's defense recorded seven quarterback sacks totaling 43 yards in losses.
Junior defensive back
Tim Harvey (Evanston, Ill.) intercepted two passes to thwart Morehead State drives, while fifth-year senior safety
Andy Green (Atlantic, Iowa) recorded his 15th career interception at Drake.
Fifth-year senior linebacker
Cole Douglas (Lawrence, an.) and junior linebacker
Ben Morrison (Long Grove, Ill.) led Drake's defense with 11 tackles apiece. Douglas had nine solo hits, including one tackle for a one-yard loss.
"The defense has been the spark behind our team the entire season," said Creighton. "They have forced turnovers, and given our offense excellent field position."
Harvey's first interception at the Morehead State 20 yardline on the next to last play of the first quarter allowed Drake to tie the score at 3-3 following a 33-yard field goal by fifth-year senior
Logan Rees (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley).
Senior Mason Webb made field goals from 32, 37 and 30 yards in the first half to account for Morehead State's scoring, while extending his consecutive field goal made streak to 11.
After Morehead State had pulled to within 10-9, Ingle marched Drake on a four-play, 55-yard scoring drive capped off by a seven-yard touchdown run from sophomore running back
Michael Lahart (Chariton, Iowa) with 14 seconds left in the second quarter.
Drake freshman nose guard
David Witkiewicz (Hales Corner, Wis.) blocked a 30-yard field goal attempt by Webb with 5:08 left in the third quarter.
Clinging to a 17-15 lead, the Bulldog defense also recorded a safety when junior tackle
Andrew Brooks (Kansas City, Mo.) sacked Morehead State quarterback Jared Phillips in his own endzone with 1:49 left in the game.
Morehead State did recover the ensuing onside kick and marched to Drake's 30 yardline before Phillips was sacked for a six-yard loss by junior tackle
Andrew Asbell (Machesney Park, Ill.) on a fourth down and one yard situation with 14 seconds left in the game.
Fifth-year senior
Zach Brower (West Des Moines, Iowa) caught a game-high eight passes for 89 yards to lead Drake, while Lahart had three receptions for 44 yards.
Drake will travel to Jacksonville (Fla.) next Saturday, while Morehead State plays at league leader Dayton.
Morehead State fell to 4-6, including a 2-4 PFL mark. Drake evened its league record to 3-3.
