DES MOINES, IOWA - The Drake volleyball team can exhale a huge sigh of relief as the Bulldogs extinguished their 10-match losing streak with a dominating 3-0 (25-12, 25-17, 25-23) victory over Indiana State on Saturday evening (Nov. 8).
Drake registered a season-best .319 hitting percentage en route to collecting its first double-digit victory campaign since 2003, as the Bulldogs improved their ledger to 10-18 overall, including 3-11 in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Sycamores' record dropped to 8-20 and 2-13 in league play with the setback.
“It is a good feeling to snap our losing streak and get to double-digit wins for the first time since 2003,” Drake head coach
Phil McDaniel commented. “Our goal is still to qualify for the MVC Tournament, but it was a good win for us to get tonight and hopefully we can build some momentum heading into our final four matches.”
The Bulldogs dominated Indiana State from the start as Drake registered 17 kills against only two errors in the first set to collect a 25-12 triumph. Led by five kills in the stanza from sophomore
Alisa DeBerg Roth (Hudson, Iowa/Hudson), the Bulldogs posted a .600 attack mark, while limiting the Sycamores to a .097 hitting percentage.
The second set followed nearly the same script with sophomores
Angela Bys (Marion, Iowa/Marion) and
Nicole Brown (Appleton, Wis./Xavier) contributing four kills and four blocks in a 25-17 Drake win.
The final stanza proved to be a barnburner as the frame featured 14 ties and eight lead changes. Trailing 23-22, DeBerg Roth squared the tilt at 23 on a kill before adding another to finish off a 25-23 victory.
DeBerg Roth matched career-bests in kills (13) and block assists (5) in the contest. Joining her with double-figure kills was Bys with 12, while junior
Chelsea Lauersdorf (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) fell one dig shy of her eighth double-double of the season distributing a match-high 34 assists to go along with a match-best nine digs.
Brown directed Drake's defensive attack with six block assists, one shy of equaling her career mark of seven set at UMKC on Oct. 29. Junior
Lindsay Schryver (Williams Bay, Wis./Williams Bay) recorded a match-best three service aces for the Bulldogs.
Jodilynn Stoker led Indiana State with an eight-kill, six-dig effort.
“Defensively, we did a good job of controlling the net this evening with Alisa (DeBerg Roth) and Nicole (Brown) having terrific performances,” McDaniel said. “Offensively, we garnered good production out of Angela (Bys) and Alisa (DeBerg Roth).”
The Bulldogs bested the Sycamores in kills (43-27), assists (37-26), digs (32-30), blocks (8.0-2.5) and service aces (7-2).
Drake returns to action on Nov. 14 as the Bulldogs face a road date at Evansville. Match time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
