ST. LOUIS, MO. ? Jill Martin (Norwalk, Iowa/Norwalk) of Drake and Bryan Mullins of Southern Illinois have been selected the Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Week. Martin and Mullins were honored for their performances during the period of Feb. 11-17. The award was the second for Martin this season and fourth overall for a Drake women's basketball player.
The Valley's Scholar-Athlete program, which is sponsored by Prairie Farms, Roberts and Hiland Dairies, honors conference student-athletes for their athletic performance for a one-week period and academic success in the classroom. The program began during the 1999-00 academic year.
“Our continued corporate partnership with Prairie Farms provides an important vehicle by which to honor our top student-athletes,” said Commissioner Elgin, who is in his 20th year with The Valley. “Our student-athletes are the league's best representatives, and we're happy to recognize Jill (Martin) and Bryan (Mullins) for their athletic and academic achievements.”
Martin, a senior from Norwalk, Iowa, averaged 19.0 points and 10.0 rebounds in helping Drake to a 1-1 mark in games versus Evansville (Feb. 14) and Southern Illinois (Feb. 16).
The MVC Player of the Week, Martin, who holds a 3.35 grade-point average in elementary education, recorded her league-leading 10th double-double with a 22-point, 11-rebound performance in a 69-66 overtime setback to Evansville (Feb. 14), Two days later against Southern Illinois (Feb. 16), she registered 16 points, while pulling down a team-high nine rebounds.
To qualify for Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
