Second-Half Tally Spoils Home Debut For Women's Soccer

DES MOINES, IOWA - Danni Healy broke a scoreless tie with a goal in the 58th minute (57:41) as South Dakota State spoiled the home debut for the Drake women's soccer team on Friday evening (Aug. 29) with a 1-0 triumph at the Cownie Soccer Complex.

The loss dropped the Bulldogs to 0-2 on the campaign, while the Jackrabbits cracked the victory column for the first time to improve to 1-2 overall.

"We struggled to mount an attack,” Drake head coach Lindsey Horner said. “Defensively we were methodical and reactive on offense. In the second half I thought we controlled the game and moved the ball well but we were slow to get shots off and a bit chaotic in the final third of the half.”

The match proved to be a defensive struggle in the first half as the majority of play was contested in the midfield with South Dakota State registering a 7-3 shot advantage. Junior goalkeeper Jenny Schroeder (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia) pulled in three of her five saves in the initial 45 minutes, while Nicole Lograsso recorded three saves.

Drake switched around its lineup in the second half and the results appeared to pay off as the Bulldogs collected eight shots in the final 45 minutes.

Healy broke the stalemate at the 57:41 mark taking a cross in the box from Erin Kasmarik and fired a one-timer into the far left corner to put South Dakota State on the board.

The Bulldogs best scoring chance came off a corner late in the second half as junior Elizabeth Woerle (Coon Rapids, Minn./Meadow Creek) fired a shot that Lograsso deflected up and over the net.

"We didn't capitalize on their mistakes in the first half and their goalkeeper (Nicole Lograsso) came up big in the second half,” Horner commented.

Woerle paced all players with four shots, including three on net, while Kasmarik led the Jackrabbits with three shots.

The two sides each registered 11 shots.

Drake returns to action on Sept. 5 as the Bulldogs travel to Albuquerque, N.M., to face New Mexico at 6:30 p.m.
