HUNTSVILLE, TEXAS - The Drake volleyball team beat Green Bay, 3-1 (25-15, 28-26, 21-25, 25-13), to win the championship of the Comfort Suites Sam Houston State Invitational on Saturday (Aug. 30).
The Bulldogs, under the guidance of first-year coach
Phil McDaniel, won their first tournament since the 2003 Eastern Illinois Invitational. Their 4-0 start to the campaign is the best at the school since 2003.
Drake sophomore
Angela Bys (Marion, Iowa/Marion) posted her first double-double of the year with a 14-kill, 13-dig performance, while sophomore
Alana Wittenburg (Readlyn, Iowa/Wapsie Valley) had 21 digs.

Mikayla Sims (Waterloo, Iowa/East) were named to the all-tournament team for Drake.
Sims finished the match with nine kills and three block assists en route to posting a career-high .450 attack mark. Junior
Chelsea Lauersdorf (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) complimented the Bulldog attack with a 45-assist, eight-dig performance.
Freshman
Michelle Reidy (Dubuque, Iowa/Wahlert Catholic) cracked double-digit kills for the first time in her career with 10, while junior
Emily Madden (Van Meter, Iowa/Adel DeSoto Minburn) and sophomore
Alisa DeBerg Roth (Hudson, Iowa/Hudson) added nine and eight, respectively. Junior
Lindsay Schryver (Williams Bay, Wis./Williams Bay) chipped in 11 digs off the bench.
Drake collected positive results in kills (54-50), assists (53-47), service aces (8-3), digs (70-63), total blocks (10.0-3.0), solo blocks (1-0) and block assists (18-6), while outhitting the Phoenix, .259 to .174.
The Bulldogs return to the court on Tuesday (Sept, 2) as Drake opens its home campaign versus Western Illinois at 7:00 p.m.
