DES MOINES, IOWA - Junior Luke Gorczyca (Overland Park, Kan./St. Thomas Aquinas) and freshman Thomas Ostrander (Fort Dodge, Iowa/St. Edmond) scored second-half goals to power the Drake men's soccer team to the championship of the Drake Classic Sunday night with a 2-0 victory past SIU-Edwardsville at Cownie Field.

"I kind of got nervous at the end of the first half when we were dominating, but unable to convert opportunities into tangible goals," said Drake coach Sean Holmes.

Drake outshot SIU-Edwardsville, 23-3, with Ostrander pacing the way with eight shots, including four on goal.

"Ostrander's goal was a teriffic reward for his effort," said Holmes."He worked so hard to bring so much energy to the field."

Gorczyca and teammate Kevin Shrout (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's Summit) had four shots apiece.

Gorczyca, who was named the most valuable player in the tournament, had three shots on goal.

"Luke (Gorczyca) was the MVP of the tournament not for the game-winning goal but for his all-around play. I don't think he made a mistake in 180 minutes," Holmes added.

Shrout also was named to the all-tournament team along with Drake teammates freshman Hunter Kennedy (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Cedar Valley Christian) and junior Julien Edwards (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada/De La Salle).

Sophomore goalkeeper Michael Drozd (Hartwood Heights, Ill./Loyola Academy) recorded his second straight shutout.

"The whole back four led by Edwards (Julien) was terrific. To start the season with two shutouts is great," Holmes added.

The Bulldogs will now embark on a eight-match road swing during the entire month of September.

Drake won't return home until entertaining Missouri State Oct. 11.

"The real challenge is when you have so few opportunities at home you need to take advantage," added Holmes.
