AMES, IOWA ? Fueled by a .357 hitting percentage, Iowa State upended Drake in second day action at the Iowa State Tournament at Hilton Coliseum on Saturday (Sept. 13) as the Cyclones earned a 3-0 (25-10, 25-13, 25-15) victory over the Bulldogs.
Iowa State improved its ledger to 7-3 overall with the triumph, while Drake suffered consecutive setbacks for the first time this season and stands at 7-3.
“Iowa State is a very good team,” Bulldog head coach
Phil McDaniel commented. “We weren't very focused defensively as we lost track of our hitters at the net and we didn't pay enough attention to details. Angela (Bys) had a solid match and we got strong play off the bench from Erika (Price) and Caitlin (Johnson).”
The Cyclones were able to establish the tone of the match early as Iowa State raced out to a 17-4 lead in set one. The Bulldogs compounded the run with eight errors, while the Cyclones registered two service aces en route to finishing the frame posting a .360 attack mark in a 25-10 triumph. Drake completed the stanza with a -.065 hitting percentage by Drake.
The Bulldogs' hitting numbers (.062) improved in the second set but Iowa State cooled only slightly attacking the ball at a .314 clip.
Drake squared the set at two on a Cyclone attack error before Iowa State tallied nine of the next 11 points to assume an 11-4 lead, an advantage it didn't relinquish in a 25-13 win. The Bulldogs were stymied by the Cyclones' defense, as they only twice were able to register consecutive points.
The final stanza got off to a positive start for Drake as a kill from sophomore
Angela Bys (Marion, Iowa/Marion) and a service ace by junior
Ashley Jarek (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North) evened the frame at three.
The Cyclones again had an answer rolling off eight unanswered tallies to extend their margin to 11-3 before a service error ended the streak.
The Bulldogs cut the margin to as close as six, 18-12, as a pair of kills from freshman
Erika Price (Littleton, Colo./Dakota Ridge) sparked a 3-0 run.
Iowa State sealed the 25-15 set-three victory on a kill by Debbie Stadick.
Bys paced the Drake attack netting a match-high 10 kills, while sophomore
Alana Wittenburg (Readlyn, Iowa/Wapsie Valley) contributed 14 digs. Leading the Bulldogs in assists with 15 was junior
Chelsea Lauersdorf (Watertown, Wis./Watertown). Price turned in a strong showing finishing with four kills and five digs and freshman
Caitlin Johnson (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore Community) provided eight assists and two digs in reserve duty.
Victoria Henson directed the Iowa State attack with 10 kills, while Jen Malcolm finished with seven kills and an eye-popping .538 hitting percentage.
The Cyclones bettered the Bulldogs in kills (42-23), assists (38-23) and digs (50-40), while blocks were all square at four apiece.
Drake concludes play at the Iowa State Tournament on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 13) as the Bulldogs face in-state rival Iowa at 4:30 p.m.
