DES MOINES, IOWA - Three second-half goals, including the game-winner from sophomore
Bailey Dorrington (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) in the 80th minute (79.20) propelled the Drake women's soccer team to its first victory of the season with a come-from-behind 3-1 win over Portland State on Sunday (Sept. 14) in Drake Stadium.
The triumph was the first in the coaching career of Bulldog head coach
Lindsey Horner and lifted Drake to 1-4 on the year, while dropping the Vikings to 1-7 overall.
After falling behind in the first half on a goal from Dolly Enneking at the 23:34 mark, the Bulldogs made adjustments at halftime and the results paid off in the final 45 minutes.
“We were down early and let them convert early chances,” Horner commented. “We can't put ourselves in a position to have to come from behind. We made adjustments at the half and started to find ways to be dangerous,”
Freshman
Danielle Figliola (Longmont, Colo./Silver Creek) made the most of her first career tally as her goal at the 64:14 mark squared the tilt at one. The shot off a give and go from freshman
Lindsey Johnston (Lincoln, Neb./Southeast) hit off the far-left post before crossing the line.
Dorrington's goal came in the midst of a scramble at the goal line where a header bounced off Portland State goalkeeper Cris Lewis and deflected to the foot of Dorrington, who converted the opportunity.
Just over two minutes later (81:42), junior
Elizabeth Woerle (Coon Rapids, Minn./Meadow Creek) accepted a cross at the top of the box from junior
Crystal Townley (Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer) and beat Lewis to the left to give Drake a 3-1 advantage.
“Crystal (Townley) was special on the ball today and Danielle (Figiola) was a workhorse,” Horner explained.
Junior
Jenny Schroeder (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia) closed the door for the rest of the affair finishing the game with four saves, while Lewis registered six.
“Our back line led by
Katie Sauer was tough to break down in the second half and was solid on both sides of the ball,” Horner said.
The Bulldogs posted a 17-13 advantage in shots, including 7-4 in the second half.
Figliola sparked Drake with four shots, all on goal, while Woerle and junior
Karissa Brown (Encinitas, Calif./La Costa Canyon) each netted three. Enneking paced all players with five shots for Portland State.
The Bulldogs were able to capitalize on thoughts from Horner during a pre-game talk, as Drake was able to secure the victory with a come-from-behind effort.
“Before the game we talked about putting forth an effort we could be proud of and for the most part we did,” Horner commented. “We executed our game plan and did what we needed to do on the field and earn the win.”
Drake returns to action on Tuesday (Sept. 16) as the Bulldogs travel to Nebraska for a 5:00 p.m. tilt. The contest was originally scheduled for last Friday (Sept. 12) before weather forced the postponement of the affair.
