SPRINGFIELD, MO. - Junior Garrett Webb (Prairie Village, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) propelled the Drake men's soccer team to its third consecutive shutout victory as his cross in the 19th minute (18:05) lifted the Bulldogs to a 1-0 triumph over Centenary on Friday evening (Sept. 5) at the Missouri State Tournament.
Webb's 11th career goal off an assist from junior Julien Edwards (Ottawa, Ontario/De La Salle) was the only shot to find the back of the net for Drake, who dominated the Gents in the shot column, 22-5, including 15-2 in the second half.
The victory pushed the Bulldogs' record to 3-0 on the campaign while dropping Centenary to 0-1.
“Tonight was the most unsatisfying 1-0 road win that I've ever experienced,” Drake head coach Sean Holmes commented. “We so dominated the game, for example a 15-2 shot advantage in the second half, that a stronger, more mature team would have stolen points off of us.”
Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Michael Drozd (Hartwood Heights, Ill./Loyola Academy) continued his stellar play in net posting three saves en route to collecting his third consecutive shutout.
“It was a battle for the win right down to the last second and it shouldn't have been,” Holmes said. “If we're going to achieve our goals as a team then we're going to need to finish off teams.”
Drake's defensive back line helped the Bulldogs equal their shutout total for all of last season (3), while keeping Centenary from sneaking a late goal in net.
“Our back four was very solid and it was a nice reward for Michael Drozd to pick up his third consecutive shutout,” Holmes explained. “Our attack often was sloppy and undisciplined and more arrogant than we deserved to be, that being said a 3-0 start feels pretty good.”
Senior Ryan Moylan (Wauwatosa, Wis./East) registered a match-high five shots for Drake, while junior Luke Gorczyca (Overland Park, Kan./St. Thomas Aquinas) and Webb chipped in four and three shots, respectively. Freshman Hunter Kennedy (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Cedar Valley Christian) added two shots in reserve duty.
Five Centenary players registered one shot apiece, while Rennie Walker pulled in 11 saves to lead the Gents.
The Bulldogs close out competition at the Missouri State Tournament on Saturday (Sept. 6) as Drake squares off versus Cleveland State at 5:00 p.m.
