DES MOINES, IOWA - Senior
Elizabeth Woerle's (Coon Rapids,
Minn./Meadow Creek) conversion of a free kick from the top of the box at the
96:55 mark sent the Drake women's soccer team into an unbridled celebration as
the Bulldogs registered a dramatic 1-0 overtime victory over Creighton on
Thursday evening (Oct. 15) at the Cownie Soccer Complex.
The triumph enabled Drake to record its sixth shutout of the season and
in the process improve its ledger to 7-6-3 overall, including 2-1 in the
Missouri Valley Conference. The
loss dropped the Bluejays to 9-5-1 on the year and 2-2 in league action.
Woerle's golden goal was set up after Creighton was whistled for a foul
just outside the box on what appeared within feet of becoming a penalty
kick. The Bluejays set up their defensive
wall in the center of the box and after addressing the ball Woerle delivered a
rocket that found the lower-left corner for her team-leading seventh goal of
the season.
"Anytime we play at home we have to come away with points, be it one
point or three points," Drake head coach Lindsey Horner commented. "Creighton
is a very dangerous team in the attack and to be able to hold them to a shutout
is a testament to our defense, from front to back."
Playing in a rain that only intensified as the game wore on the Bulldogs
collected the victory despite being outshot by the MVC's most-potent offensive
unit, 12-11.
Woerle and sophomore Danielle Figliola (Longmont, Colo./Silver Creek), who came off the bench, paced the
Drake attack with a team-high three shots apiece, while Brittney Neuman led all
players with five shots.
"Our bench provided us a huge spark as everyone came into the game did
their role and that was instrumental in helping us earn the victory," Horner
explained.
Sophomore Kourtney Arnold
(Norwalk, Iowa/Norwalk) pulled in nine saves for the Bulldogs en route to
collecting her sixth shutout of the season. Alicia Montgomery snagged four stops for Creighton.
Drake honored 18 university faculty members in a pregame ceremony in the
first annual Faculty Appreciation night.
Each Bulldog nominated a member of the Drake faculty that have inspired
them to great things. Many of
those honored stayed on the sidelines and provided the Bulldogs a huge lift in collecting
the win.
"It is a testament to the character and leadership of our faculty that
so many of those individuals came out to be honored and then braved the
elements to support the team on such a dreary evening," Horner said. "We're proud that we could honor these
individuals for all the work they do on a daily basis to make the Drake
experience so special for all our student-athletes."
Drake returns to action on Sunday (Oct. 18) with a 1:00 p.m. matinee
affair at Missouri State.
