SPRINGFIELD, MO. - The Drake women's soccer team came up short in its bid for
a victory at Missouri State on Sunday (Oct. 18) as the Bears collected tallies
in each half en route to a 2-0 triumph.
The Bulldogs' record fell to 7-7-3 overall and 2-2 in the
Missouri Valley Conference, while Missouri State improved its slate to 7-5-2
and 3-1-0 in league play.
"Traditionally in past seasons we have given up double-digit
goals on restarts throughout the season," Drake head coach Lindsey Horner commented. "After ending our
season on a free kick goal last year in double overtime at the MVC Tournament,
we have taken pride in defending restarts, and until today
we had yet to let in a goal."
"Today we were casual in our
markings and lacked a sense of urgency in winning loose balls. Missouri
State punished us as both goals came from corners we didn't clear and it being
scrappier than us. Once they got
on the board, they did a good job of moving the ball and making us chase the
game."
Jenna Dobkins provided the Bears an early 1-0 advantage
connecting on her first goal of the season at the 5:19 mark. Dobkins finished off a deflection of
Megan Jaskowiak's shot to beat sophomore goalkeeper Kourtney Arnold (Norwalk, Iowa/Norwalk).
The lead remained at 1-0 until Samantha Aguilar netted her
first tally of the season in the 75th minute (74:24) off a corner kick by Tara
Bailes.
Drake was bettered in the contest in shots, 12-9, while
senior Elizabeth Woerle (Coon Rapids, Minn./Meadow Creek) shared top-game honors with four
shots, including three on goal.
Aguilar paced the Bears with four shots.
Arnold finished the affair with three saves for Drake, while
Jessica Teahan pulled in six saves for Missouri State.
"There were small periods of the game where we had momentum,
but we didn't look dangerous," Horner said. "We need some players to step
up in our last two games in order to compete for a result."
The Bulldogs close out the road portion of their schedule
next Sunday (Oct. 25) with a 1:00 p.m. tilt at Illinois State.
