DES MOINES, IOWA - Redshirt sophomore Ali Walsh's (Florissant, Mo.Hazelwood Central) goal from 20 yards out on the left wing with 35 seconds left in the second overtime powered the Drake women's soccer team to a 1-0 non-conference victory past North Dakota Sunday (Oct. 4) at Drake Stadium.
It marked Drake's fourth shutout over the last seven contests.
"In the end it doesn't matter which team creates the best chances or
the most chances to score, it's obviously about who gets the most
goals," said Drake head coach Lindsey Horner. "We didn't play the most
attractive game, but we had plenty of opportunities to put this game
away much earlier."
The Bulldogs evened their record to 5-5-3 entering a Thursday Missouri Valley Conference home match with Northern Iowa.
"North Dakota is much improved since last year and fought the entire
game," Horner added. "We'll take the win and the shutout and look to
gain momentum from this going into the UNI game."
Drake outshot North Dakota, 20-6. Walsh led the Bulldog attack with six shots, including three on goal.
Senior forward Crystal Townley (Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer) and senior midfielder Blair Nelson (Southlake, Texas/Carroll) each had three shots for Drake.
Sophomore Kourtney Arnold (Norwalk, Iowa/Norwalk) went the distance in goal for Drake recording three saves.
North Dakota fell to 1-8-1.
The Bulldogs return to action on Thursday (Oct. 8) as Drake entertains Northern Iowa in a 7:00 p.m. tilt at the Cownie Soccer Complex.
