Last-Second Field Goal Beats Football Team

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. -- David Lang kicked a 27-yard field goal with one second left Saturday as Butler spoiled Drake's hopes of a Pioneer Football League championship with a 20-17 victory Saturday.

Drake closed out the season with an 8-3 record, including a 6-2 league mark. The win allowed Butler to share the league title with Dayton, which also won Saturday, with a 7-1 conference record.

Butler will represent the PFL in the Dec. 5 Gridiron Classic against Central Connecticut State, which captured the Northeast Conference crown.

Lang's heroics were set up after Butler's Nick Caldicott intercepted a pass thrown by quarterback Michael Piatkowski at the Drake 49 yard line with 43 seconds left in the game.

Butler was able to drive to the Drake nine yard line with four seconds remaining to set up the game winning field goal.

"This is tough for our fifth-year seniors who put so much into this program," said Drake head football coach Chris Creighton. "We just came up short. These guys accomplished so much and helped get the swagger back in our program.

"They went through three head coaches in three years, so it was remarkable for them to get us in a spot to fight for the league championship. I hope it is something that they look back on their career to see the depth of the achievements they've had in keeping the program together."

The loss dampened a brilliant performance by Drake's defense.

Butler entered the game leading the Pioneer Football League in total offense, averaging 396.3 yards. But Drake held Butler to 349 yards, while also forcing four turnovers.

Drake forced Butler into turnovers on its opening two possessions of the game.

Junior cornerback Michael Lahart and senior safety Skye Buckner-Petty led Drake's defense with seven tackles apiece.

Defensive end Dain Taylor forced two fumbles, while recording three tackles totaling 12 yards in losses. Linebacker Ben Morrison recovered two fumbles for Drake.

Taylor sacked quarterback Andrew Huck for an eight-yard loss on the fifth play of the game, with Morrison recovering at the 50 yard line.

Drake took advantage, moving down to the Butler four yard line before settling for a 23-yard field goal by Brandon Wubs with 8:37 left in the first quarter to take a 3-0 lead.

Taylor sacked Huck for a three-yard loss, while forcing a fumble on Butler's second offensive series at the Butler 33 yard line.

But Drake couldn't convert and was forced to punt.

"Our defense forced turnovers, but we didn't convert them into enough points," Creighton added.

Early in the third quarter, Drake did take advantage of a fumble recovery at the Butler 28 yard line with Morrison returning it 21 yards.

From there junior running back Patrick Cashmore bulldozed his way for a seven-yard touchdown run to stake Drake to a 10-3 lead with 10:15 left in the third quarter.

Butler answered with two touchdowns to go up 17-10.

Piatkowski spotted freshman Joey Orlando open for a 53-yard touchdown pass with 9:53 left in the game.

Piatkowski completed 17 of 29 passes for 166 yards.  He finished the season with 2,139 yards passing - the most by a Drake quarterback since Connor Jostes threw for 2,196 yards in 2004.
