DES MOINES,IOWA -- Drake piled up a 422 yards total offense, including a career-high 100 yards rushing by freshman reserve
Trey Morse (Elmo, Texas/Parish Episcopal), to post its sixth straight victory with a 49-6 Pioneer Football League romp past Campbell Saturday.
The Bulldogs improved their record to 8-1, matching the best nine-game start in school history.
Drake also maintained a share of the Pioneer Football League lead with Butler at 6-0.
Drake's current seven-game PFL winning streak is the longest against league opponents in school history. It also marked the Bulldogs' eighth straight home win.
Morse led a stout Drake rushing attack that netted a season-high 200 yards. He nearly doubled his combined rushing yardage total (56) from his previous four games and capped a brilliant effort with a 34-yard scoring dash with 1:02 left in the third quarter.
Four of Drake's scoring drives took only 2 minutes 8 seconds or less.
"Slowly but surely our offense is coming around," said Drake coach
Chris Creighton, whose team will close out its three-game homestand facing Dayton next Saturday. "We spent a lot of time on their fronts and covers. We didn't introduce anything new today. Our plan was to run our offense versus their fronts.”
Meanwhile, Drake's defense limited Campbell to 202 yards total offense
Drake scored three touchdowns on three straight possessions midway through the first half to race to a 21-0 lead.
Redshirt freshman quarterback Mike Piatkowski (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton) threw touchdown passes of eight and 24 yards to senior tight end
Frank Pucher (Skokie, Ill//Notre Dame) and freshman
Joey Orlando (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South), respectively, giving Drake a 14-0 advantage.
Drake senior linebacker
Cale Hunt (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield) then recovered a fumble at the Campbell 27 yardline to set up the Bulldogs' third touchdown. It took only four plays before senior
Spencer Cady (Fort Dodge, Iowa) scored on a two-yard touchdown run with 9:42 left in the second quarter.
In the second half, sophomore
Hans Broman (Fort Collins, Colo./Fort Collins) and junior
Tom Kostek (West Des Moines, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) scored touchdown runs of eight and two yards, respectively.
Hunt finished with nine tackles, including seven solo hits, to pace the Drake defense. Sophomore
Tyler Moorehead (Mason City, Iowa) and senior
Skye Buckner-Petty (Florissant, Mo.) added seven tackles apiece
Piatkowski completed 21 of 26 passes for 201 yards to push his season total to 1,885 yards - the most passing yardage by a Drake quarterback since 2004.
Orlando and sophomore
Drew Blackmon (Florissant, Mo.) each caught five passes for Drake.
“On both sides you saw a lot of new numbers," Creighton added. "You'd love to see those guys play more often. That makes me proud.”
