DES MOINES, IOWA --
Senior forward Lauren Dybing (Bloomington, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran) tied a career high
with 21 points as the Drake women's basketball team presented head coach Amy
Stephens with her 100th victory at the school with a 69-47 Missouri Valley
Conference victory past Evansville Saturday.
Sophomore guard Kristin Turk (Des Moines,
Iowa/Lincoln) came off the bench to score 14 points, including five in the
opening four minutes of the second half as Drake broke a 28-28 halftime tie by
going on a 7-0 run to grab a 35-28 lead it never relinquished.
"This milestone is more a
reflection of the great support I've been associated with at Drake, including
my assistant coaches, players and administrative staff," said Stephens.
"I'm incredibly thankful to be at Drake. I absolutely love coaching
here."
Stephens becomes the third Drake coach
to reach the century mark, joining Carole Baumgarten (1974-86) and Lisa Bluder
(1990-2000).
The Bulldogs shot 50 percent in the
second half, while limiting Evansville to 25.9 percent shooting.
"We did a complete 180 in the
second half and played one of our better halves of the season," said Turk,
who made six of nine shots, while grabbing five rebounds two steals and two
assists.
The Bulldogs earned their fourth
straight victory before a season-high crowd of 3,897 for the annual Hoops 4
Hoop dedicated to raising cancer awareness.
For the occasion Drake players played
donned home pink uniforms which were auctioned off during the game. The auction
raised $3,900 which will be donated to the American Cancer Society.
"This was just a game,"
added senior Kelsey Keizer, who had six points and six rebounds. "But when
you see 3,000 fans in pink you know we're playing for a good cause."
Junior guard Jordann Plummer (St. Louis, Mo./Cardinal Ritter) scored in double figures for the 10th consecutive game, adding 11 points along with six rebounds.
Drake held Evansville 15 points
under its season average of 62 and topped the Purple Aces in rebounds
(38-36), points in the paint (32-20), second-chance points (17-9), fast break
points (12-4) and bench points (16-11).
The Bulldogs, who improve to 16-8 overall
and 10-3 in the conference, travel to in-state rival Northern Iowa for a 7:05
match-up Thursday (Feb. 19).
