OMAHA, NEB. -- The Drake women's basketball team survived a five minute
28-second span without a basket late in the game to escape with a 51-44
Missouri Valley Conference victory past Creighton in the first college women's
basketball game ever played at the Qwest Center.
Drake, avenging a 68-65 home setback to Creighton Jan.
31, moved to 17-10 overall, while moving into third place in the league with an
11-5 mark. Creighton fell to 17-10, including a 12-4 second-place conference
record.
“I am so proud of our teams' effort and determination”, said Drake head coach
Amy Stephens, whose team snapped a two-game losing streak.
After a layup by senior forward Lauren Dybing (Bloomington, Minn./St. Croix
Lutheran) gave Drake a 41-28 lead with 6:16, the Bulldogs would not make
another basket until junior forward Monique' Jones (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's
Summit North) hit a layup with 47 seconds left.
"That was the dagger by Jones to put us up by seven," added Stephens.
During the drought, Creighton whittled away from a 42-28 deficit to pull within
42-38 with 2:32 left. But the Bulldogs sealed the victory by making seven of 10
free throws in the final minute.
Drake rallied from a 21-15 halftime deficit earning the comeback victory with
junior starting point guard and leading scorer, Jordann Plummer (St. Louis,
Mo./Cardinal Ritter) watching most of the second half from the sideline after she
collected her fourth foul. She played a season-low 16 minutes before fouling
out.
“I loved how they responded to the challenges all week in practice and that
carried over after playing a terrible first half, we came out in the second
half and played our game,” added Stephens.
Jones had her fifth double-double of the season with 13
points and 12 rebounds. Dying added another double-double with 11 points and 10
rebounds, including 11 points and five rebounds in the second half.
Freshman Rachael Hackbarth (Colgate, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) came off the
bench to collect a career-high 14 points and nine rebounds.
Drake shot 35.6 percent (16-of-45), including 45.8 percent (11-of-24)
in the second half.
Creighton shot a season-low 21.9 percent on 16-of-73. The
Bluejays, who average 7.2 three-pointers per game, made a season-low two.
The Bulldogs grabbed a season-high 52 rebounds, edging
Creighton 52-45 on the boards.
Drake wraps up the regular season, hosting league-leading
Illinois State, Thursday (March 5) and Indiana State, Saturday (March 7). Game
times are scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and 2:05 p.m., respectively.
