LINCOLN, NEB. - Senior
Kari Sloboth (Omaha, Neb.) sealed the initial victory of the season for the Drake women's tennis team rallying to record a come-from-behind three-set triumph (4-6, 6-0, 6-3) over Carolina Chaix in the Bulldog's 4-3 win over Wyoming on Saturday (Feb. 7).
Drake moved its ledger to 1-4 overall, while the Cowgirls, who played with only five players, fell to 0-2 on the year.
“Kari fought extremely well today and I was really happy with her performance,” Bulldog head coach
Urska Juric commented. “Jessica (Aguilera) played a great match as well for us.”
Drake garnered the doubles point in the affair when the tandem of senior
Veronika Leszayova (Povaszka Bystrica, Slovak Republic) and freshman
Morgan Rainey (Kansas City, Mo.) netted an 8-2 decision over Chaix and Carly Van Hollen at the No. 2 doubles slot.
Providing the Bulldogs with points in singles to set the stage for Sloboth's heroics were freshmen
Jessica Aguilera (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) and
Amanda Aragon (Fort Collins, Colo.). Aguilera registered a 6-3, 6-3 decision over Jamie Nelson at the No. 4 spot, while Aragon collected a default victory at the No. 6 position.
Drake closes out is weekend stay in Nebraska on Sunday as the Bulldogs tangle with the Cornhuskers at 11:00 a.m.
