Drake Opens Home Campaign With A 7-0 Victory Over Gustavus Adolphus

DES MOINES, IOWA - After playing its first 11 matches of the spring on the road, the Drake women's tennis team made the most of its 2009 home debut at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center registering a 7-0 triumph over Gustavus Adolphus on Saturday (March 21).

The Bulldogs snapped their three-match losing streak with the victory and improved their ledger to 4-8 on the year while dropping the Gusties to 8-5 overall.

“The first home match of the season started successfully for us,” Bulldog head coach Urska Juric commented.  “We played very well at every spot and I'm very proud of the team. We will try and carry over the same intensity and focus to tomorrow's matches against Nebraska-Omaha and South Dakota.”

Drake swept all three doubles contests to secure a lead it didn't relinquish.

Senior Veronika Leszayova (Povazska Bystrica, Slovak Republic) began singles play extending the Bulldogs' advantage to 2-0 on the strength of a 6-0, 6-1 decision over Sierra Krebsbach at the No. 1 position.

Freshman Amanda Aragon (Fort Collins, Colo.) pushed to margin to 3-0 before senior Kari Sloboth (Omaha, Neb.) sealed the win downing Marianne Barau at the No. 5 singles hole, 6-2, 6-0.  Aragon bettered Christine Reimer at No. 6, 6-1, 6-0.

Rounding out the victory total for the Bulldogs were freshmen Gabby Demos (Chesterfield, Mo.), Jessica Aguilera (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) and Morgan Rainey (Kansas City, Mo.) at the Nos. 2, 4 and 3 slots, respectively.

Drake concludes its three-match homestand with a pair of tilts on Sunday (March 22) as the Bulldogs host Nebraska-Omaha and South Dakota at 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., respectively.
