DES MOINES, IOWA ? Michigan senior Tiffany Ofili, a three-time NCAA champion, and Ryan Wilson have been named the outstanding men's and women's performers, respectively, of the 2009 Drake Relays.
Omet Kak, a senior at North High School in Des Moines, and Whitney Westrum, a senior at Waukee High School were named the outstanding high school boys' and girls' performers, respectively.
Twelve meet records were set and one equaled during the 100th running of the Drake Relays.
Wilson was named as recipient of the Maury White Award, named after the long-time decorated sportswriter for the
Des Moines Register, who died in 1999.
Despite running out of lane eight, Wilson ran the second fastest men's 110 hurdle time in the world this year at 13.21 en route to setting a Drake Relays and Drake Stadium record in the invitational 110 hurdles.
Ofili was the only collegian in the women's 100 hurdles field which included two-time world champion Perdita Felicien and Lolo Jones, who was ranked No. 1 in the world last year.
Ofili posted the second fastest U.S. time in the women's 100 hurdles this spring at 12.82, while surpassing her previous season best of 12.88 at the Texas Relays. Ofili's time also was the third fastest in the world this year.
Ofili had won the 2008 Drake Relays university-college division 100 hurdles. She also won the 2008 NCAA Outdoor title at Drake Stadium.
Kak was named recipient of the Robert Kramme Award as the outstanding high school boys performer.
Kak opened the Drake Relays on Thursday by capturing the 3,200-meter run in 9:19.71 and then came back on Saturday to win the 1,600 in 4:19.43.
Westrum was one of the most versatile performers in the high school girls' division. She ran the anchor leg on Waukee's 4x400 relay which set a Drake Relays record and an Iowa all-time best of 3:50.21.
She also ran legs on Waukee's winning 4x100 (48.72) and sprint medley (1:46.73) relays. Westrum also finished sixth in the high school girls' 100 in 13.12.
