FORT WAYNE, IND. - Senior
Julien Edwards' (Ottawa, Ontario/De La Salle) goal in the 88th
minute (87:38) lifted No. 21 Drake to a come-from-behind 2-1 men's soccer
victory over No. 7 Indiana on Thursday evening (Aug. 27) at the National Soccer
Festival.
The game-winning goal came on a scramble in front of the net
off of a corner kick by redshirt freshman Matt Prather (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's Summit
North).
"Tonight was good as we played all 20 players, moved the
ball around, stayed injury free and played good soccer," Drake head coach Sean Holmes
commented. "We could afford to get
better defensively and finish more chances but to come to Indiana's home state
and get a result is always encouraging.
I think the players have a sense of the possibilities that lie before
them this year."
The Hoosiers cracked the scoring column first in the affair
in the 28th minute (27:55) when Will Bruin fired a shot that beat redshirt
junior Michael Drozd (Harwood Heights, Ill./Loyola Academy).
Despite trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Bulldogs owned a 6-5
advantage in shots in the first half.
Junior Evan Harrison (Evansville, Ind./Reitz Memorial) squared the affair
at one at the 57:06 mark when his shot from the left box beat Luis Soffner to
the lower left corner. Sophomore Hunter Kennedy (Cedar
Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) bumped a long ball to Harrison from Drozd to earn the
assist on the tally.
The Bulldogs recorded a 13-12 advantage in shots in the game
and were led by two shots apiece from Edwards, senior Garrett Webb (Prairie Village, Kan./Shawnee
Mission East) and redshirt sophomore Michael Noonan (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier). Indiana was paced by two shots apiece
from Bruin and Lee Hagedorn.
Drozd pulled in four saves for Drake, while Soffner
collected three saves for the Hoosiers.
The Bulldogs return to action on Tuesday (Sept. 1) when
Drake hosts DePaul at the Cownie Soccer Complex beginning at 7:00 p.m.
