COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. - Kelly
Lavoie's goal in the 88th minute (87:02) broke open a 2-2 tilt and lifted
Colorado College to a 3-2 women's soccer victory over Drake on Friday (Aug. 28)
at the Colorado College/Fairfield Inn Invitational.
The decision pushed the Tigers' record to 1-0, while dropping the
Bulldogs to 1-2 on the campaign.
"I thought we expended a lot of energy in the first half defensively and
our inability to connect passes when we won the ball wore us down," Drake head
coach Lindsey Horner commented. "In the second half, I thought we
opened up the game, but we need to be better defensively. We have to play with a greater sense of
urgency in the box."
The Bulldogs kept the game close throughout despite Colorado College
owning a decided 14-5 advantage in shots.
Senior Melissa Lewis (Edina,
Minn.) put Drake on the board first as she accepted a drop-back pass from fellow
senior and Colorado Springs, Colo., native Crystal Townley (Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer) and fired a laser from 20 yards inside
the far post at the 10:41 mark for a 1-0 advantage.
The lead held until the 34th minute (33:26) when Emily Beans scored the
first of her two goals on the afternoon with an assist from Tiffany Brown.
Beans pushed the margin to 2-1 just over four minutes later at the 37:41
mark with an unassisted tally.
The score remained in favor of the Tigers until sophomore Danielle Figliola (Longmont,
Colo./Silver Creek) took a feed and buried a shot into the far post side
netting for an unassisted goal to square the affair at two in the 80th minute
(79:31).
Brittney Lyman paced all players with three shots for Colorado College,
while the Bulldogs received one shot apiece from Lewis, Townley, senior Elizabeth Woerle (Coon Rapids,
Minn./Meadow Creek), Figliola and senior Karissa Brown (Encinitas, Calif./La Costa Canyon).
Sophomore Kourtney Arnold
(Norwalk, Iowa/Norwalk) recorded a game-high four saves, while Caitlin Hulyo
collected two stops for the Tigers.
Drake closes out action at the Colorado College/Fairfield Inn
Invitational on Sunday (Aug. 30) as the Bulldogs battle Syracuse at 1:00 p.m.
