IOWA CITY, IOWA - The Drake volleyball team closed the Hawkeye Challenge with a 3-0 sweep (25-21, 25-15, 25-21) of host Iowa Saturday. The win was the first overall since the 2003 season and first in Iowa City since the 1982 season.
Senior setter Chelsea Lauersdorf (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) and junior outside hitter Alisa DeBerg Roth (Hudson, Iowa/Hudson) were named to their third and second all-tournament team this season, respectively.
"We wanted to come out strong from the start and make smart plays at the net," said Drake head coach Phil McDaniel. "We also served very well, keeping them on their heels from the start."
The Bulldogs were consistent at the net, hitting .279 with 45 kills and 14 errors on 111 attempts. Sophomore outside hitter Mikayla Sims (Waterloo, Iowa/East) led the way, hitting at a .588 clip with 11 kills and one error on 17 attempts.
"Mikayla had a great game for us," noted McDaniel. "When we can attack that well from the right side we are a tough team to beat."
Junior outside hitter Angela Bys (Marion, Iowa/Marion) added nine kills, followed by DeBerg Roth and senior outside hitter Emily Madden (Van Meter, Iowa/Adel DeSoto Minburn) with eight kills apiece.
Lauersdorf had 20 assists along with eight digs for the Bulldogs, while sophomore setter Caitlin Johnson (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore Community) added 15 assists.
Junior libero Alana Wittenburg (Redlyn, Iowa/Wapsie Valley) was again the defensive anchor with a team-high 14 digs.
Drake topped the Hawkeyes in kills (45-39), attack percentage (.279-.157), assists (39-36), digs (46-43) and service aces (4-0). Iowa had the edge in blocks with a 5-4 advantage.
Next up for the Bulldogs is a Tuesday (Sept. 15) home match with UMKC at 7 p.m. before beginning conference play with in-state rival Northern Iowa, Friday (Sept. 18) at 7 p.m. Drake also hosts Bradley, Saturday (Sept. 19) at 7 p.m.
"Defeating Iowa is something we will use as a springboard into conference play," said McDaniel. "We know the conference is tough from top to bottom and we need to be on our game at all times to be competitive in the MVC."
