The Drake University volleyball team earned a four-set victory (25-20, 25-23, 24-26, 25-15) over Indiana State Friday, pushing its record to 17-2 overall and
ensuring its second-straight winning season.
"It's a good start, but we have a ways to go before we
celebrate," said head coach Phil McDaniel. "It's a tough conference and we'll
see everyone again."
Senior outside hitter Angela Bys (Marion, Iowa) led Drake with 20 kills, her second
20-kill effort of the season, and notched a season-best .409 attack percentage.
Bys last topped 20 kills with 22 Drake's five-set win over Iowa on Sept. 14. The senior also tallied 10 digs for her ninth double-double of the season.
Senior Mikayla Sims (Waterloo, Iowa) tallied a season-best 10 kills for the fifth time
this season and was her usual, efficient self with a .588 attack percentage. Sophomore
Whitney Westrum (Waukee, Iowa)
equaled Sims with 10 kills.
Junior Erika Price
(Littleton, Colo.) led the Bulldogs and tied a career-best with 16 digs. Price,
senior libero Alana Wittenburg
(Readlyn, Iowa) and junior setter Caitlin Johnson (Sycamore, Ill.) were Drake's top serving threats, combining for 52 total attempts with Johnson and Wittenburg tying career-bests with two aces.
Johnson added 22 assists, three digs and a career-high five kills.
"Our service team did very well tonight," McDaniel added.
Senior setter Susan Clausen (Johnston, Iowa) also tallied 22 assists, a career-best. Clausen added eight digs to fall two short of her third-straight double-double.
The win was McDaniel's 51st-career victory, tying him
with Bill Bowers (1976-77) for the third most in team annals.
Drake last achieved back-to-back winning seasons in 1995
and '96.
The Bulldogs meet Illinois State in Normal, Ill. Saturday at 7 p.m.
