DES MOINES, IOWA -
The Drake University volleyball team ended a three-game winless streak with a,
3-1, (25-19, 25-22, 23-25, 25-22) Missouri Valley Conference victory over
Creighton Saturday night at the Drake Knapp Center.
Sophomore Whitney Westrum (Waukee, Iowa) set career highs with 43 attempts and 23 digs and tied
a career-high with 11 kills for her first-ever double-double. Westrum played
through the full rotation and was called upon in key situations for the
Bulldogs.
"She came in tonight very focused and
was tremendous in the back row," said head coach Phil McDaniel. "She took a
couple swings at the end and you could tell she was going on pure adrenaline.
She stayed very focused and level-headed all night."
Senior Angela Bys (Marion, Iowa) led Drake with 13 kills in 42 swings and
became just the 21st Valley performer to reach the 1,500 kill plateau. Senior Alisa DeBerg Roth (Hudson, Iowa) tallied nine kills, two blocks, an assist and
two digs from the outside hitter position.
The Bulldogs won despite trailing in
attack percentage (.177-.183), digs (80-82), and team blocks (8-11).
"Creighton is a solid team that's been playing well all
season," McDaniel added. "We needed a win for our confidence. Now we can start
setting the tempo and attitude for the second half."
The teams played on a pink court and wore pink uniforms
for the annual Dig Pink match, part of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, to promote
breast cancer awareness.
"It's a worthwhile cause that touched a lot of us in the
arena tonight," McDaniel said. "Anything we can do to help with research is OK
with us. Wearing the pink and white jerseys tonight was something special."
Drake improved to 18-5 overall and 4-5 in the Valley.
Creighton moved to 12-7 on the year, 7-2 in conference play.
The Bulldogs travel to South Dakota State on Tuesday.
