BROOKINGS, S.D. -
After heading to the locker room in an 0-2 hole, the Drake University
Volleyball team rallied to a 3-2 (23-25, 24-26, 25-19, 25-18, 15-11) victory at
South Dakota State Tuesday night in its final nonconference matchup.
After enduring a season-long three-game losing streak,
Drake has rebounded to win two-straight. The win was the first time the
Bulldogs (19-5, 4-5 MVC) have rallied from an 0-2 deficit since doing so at
Bradley Nov. 20, 2009.
"We came out a little slow and couldn't quite gain control
in those first two sets," said head coach Phil McDaniel. "We had a good talk at
intermission and got ourselves squared away. Our ability to maintain pressure
throughout entire sets was the difference between the first two sets and the
last three."
Four players tallied double-digit kill numbers with senior
Alisa DeBerg Roth's (Hudson, Iowa)
season-high 14 leading the way. DeBerg Roth also tallied a team-high four total
blocks and hit a game-best .387 to log her best all-around match of the season.
"She set the tone early and did a good job at the net
blocking," said McDaniel. "She worked very hard tonight to keep the team
motivated."
Sophomore outside hitter Whitney Westrum (Waukee, Iowa) notched her second career and
second-straight double-double with 10 kills and 14 digs. Junior setter Caitlin Johnson (Sycamore, Ill.) registered
her team-leading 10th double-double of the season with 14 digs and 30 assists.
Senior Angela Bys
(Marion, Iowa) and junior Michelle Reidy
(Dubuque, Iowa) added 11 and 12 kills, respectively. Sophomores Bentley Mancini (Burnsville, Minn.) and
Emily Heffernen (Manchester, Iowa)
each totaled nine kills. Mancini's total was a career-high.
"Once we were able to control the ball, we could run our
offense the way we're supposed to," McDaniel said. "We were able to spread the
ball around and get looks to a number of different attackers."
The Bulldogs resume Missouri Valley Conference play
Friday at No. 14 UNI. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the McLeod Center.
