BALTIMORE, MD. -- Former Drake standout Billy Cundiff kicked a 38-yard field goal with just over four minutes played in overtime to propel the Baltimore Ravens to a 37-34 National Football League victory past Buffalo Sunday.
It was Cundiff's sixth game-winner of his NFL career and his third field goal of the day (41, 48 and 38 yards).
"I felt like I was in a good rhythm today," said Cundiff, who set 15 Drake and five Pioneer Football League records from 1998-2001. "So when I got out there, I just did exactly what I did on the previous two times."
Trailing only the Oakland Raiders' Sebastian Janikowski for the NFL lead in touchbacks and boasting a robust 10-of-12 conversion rate on field goals thus far, Cundiff has drawn the praise of Baltimore head coach John Harbaugh. Cundiff -- has 18 touchbacks compared to Janikowski's 20 -- has performed well.
“I like Billy (Cundiff),” Harbaugh said. “I think he's a heck of a kicker, and obviously, that's been proven. He's probably leading the league in touchbacks, and I'm not sure what his field goal percentage is, but has he missed, what, one? Two, OK. He's made some big kicks for us, so he's done a great job. I think everybody can see that.”
Cundiff set the Drake career marks for points (284), field goals (49-of-79) and PATs (137-of-151). He also ranked 14th on the NCAA I-AA career field goal list, connecting on 49. Cundiff made eight field goals over 50 yards during his career at Drake, including a Pioneer Football League record 62-yard field goal as a junior in 2000 against San Diego.
