WICHITA, KAN. -
The Drake University volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (17-25, 25-27, 16-25) Missouri
Valley Conference decision to Wichita State, Saturday (Nov. 6). The Bulldogs
fell in three after coming up short in a competitive second set and entering
the locker room in an 0-2 hole.
Seniors Angela Bys
(Marion, Iowa) and Mikayla Sims
(Waterloo, Iowa) led Drake with nine kills each.
Senior Alana Wittenburg (Readlyn, Iowa) paced the Bulldogs with a season-low 12 digs.
Wittenburg added to her single season Drake digs record, set last night at
Missouri State and currently at 665.
"We didn't keep enough pressure on Wichita State to keep
them out of system," said head coach Phil McDaniel.
The Shocker defense outblocked Drake by a factor of three
(12-4). Sims was Drake's leading blocker with three block assists.
The Bulldogs fell to 22-8 overall and 7-8 in conference
play, tying Illinois State, who defeated Evansville on Saturday, for the fifth
seed in the quickly approaching State Farm MVC Tournament. The Redbirds own the
tiebreaker over Drake.
"We'll focus on getting better possessions and cutting
down errors this week," said McDaniel. It's about maintaining the six-and-up
spot (in the conference standings) and getting to the tournament."
The Bulldogs meet Creighton in Omaha, Neb. next Saturday
(Nov. 13) at 7 p.m.
