DES MOINES, IOWA - The Drake women's tennis team parlayed gritty
performances in singles play into its second consecutive victory as the
Bulldogs posted a 7-0 decision over Gustavus Adolphus on Sunday (Feb. 21) at
the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.
After splitting the first two
doubles contests, the Drake tandem of sophomores Jessica Aguilera (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) and Amanda Aragon (Fort Collins, Colo.) corralled the doubles point on
the strength of their 8-4 triumph over Katie Allen and Ali O'Neal at the No. 3
position.
The Gusties made the Bulldogs
earn every point in singles action as three of the six matches necessitated a
third set to determine a winner.
Freshman Manca Krizman (Solkan, Slovenia) easily disposed of Sam Frank at
the top singles hole, 6-1, 6-0, before fellow freshman Ali Patterson (Overland Park, Kan.) pushed the lead to 3-0
following an identical 6-1, 6-0 triumph over O'Neal at No. 3.
Clinching the match on the No. 2
court was sophomore Gabriela Demos
(Chesterfield, Mo.), who bettered Sierra Krebsbach, 6-3, 6-0.
The bottom half of singles play
saw matches at the Nos. 4, 5 and 6 slots each extended to the third and
deciding frame.
Fortunately for the Bulldogs the
trio of Aguilera, junior Jessica Labarte
(Barcelona, Venezuela) and sophomore Earlynn Lauer (Wichita, Kan.) all pulled out triumphs to secure the match victory.
Drake returns to action on Saturday
(Feb. 27) as the Bulldogs entertain Nebraska-Omaha and UMKC at 10:00 a.m. and
6:00 p.m., respectively.
